  • Array2025 – Glimpses on 50 years International Computer Music Conference ICMC
    2025

In 1974, the firs ICMC took place at Michigan State University, back then organized by David Wessel. Since then, many leading technologies, path-providing thoughts and influential music was presented. The sheer number of papers and music presented at all these ICMCs is mind blowing. For this issue, we invited colleagues that have been involved shaping the community around the International Computer Music Conference and Association through out these years to recommended papers that have been published at ICMCs to republish them. We provide some thoughts on the selection as well as comments from the authors on their papers if feasible. The 16 articles presented in this issue are definitely not a comprehensive selection, but we hope, they can provide glimpses on at least some of the highlights we could experience in the last 50 years.

ARRAY2024 – (Virtual) Presence in Hybrid Spaces
    2024

When talking about performing music, the focus is usually set on an audible realization of sonic ideas within a physical space – a concert hall or performance location. However, this physical space has been extended by means of media in various ways on acoustic but also on visual levels, e.g. with the integration of audio recordings, video footage, and real-time implementation of audio-visual processing. With the developments in digital networks and the growing bandwidth for online-streaming, new possibilities opened up to extend concerts and performances to performers and listeners who are no longer necessarily physically present at the concert venue.

This issue presents texts connected to the symposium "(Virtual) Presence!? Musical performances in hybrid spaces" that took place on July 17th and 18th, 2024 at Freie Universität Berlin, reacting and reflecting on the discussions at the event, but also extending on connected and ongoing research projects in music research and music practice that explore the boundaries of musical performances in various new spatial settings.

  • ARRAY2023 – Flux. Computer Music in the Anthropocene
    2023

The Anthropocene, the current epoch named for humanity's impact on earth systems, is characterized by some of the most pressing issues of our time, including global warming, biodiversity loss, mass pollution, water shortages, and more. This is not only subject to research on geology, ecosystems, and biodiversity of earth, but also reflected and discussed in and through artistic works and work processes.

This issue brings together explicitly artistic perspectives on topics such as global warming, the influence of climate change on our environment ranging from melting of glaciers to the effects on indigenous cultures, new reflections resulting from listening to the environment, as well as reflections on how our own behavior in the field of music tech related arts may effect the ongoing environmental changes.
